*Like [http://rct.wikia.com/wiki/Inverted_Roller_Coaster Inverted Roller Coaster], Flying Roller Coaster gives very high Nausea ratings due to negative vertical G's at ground slopes so keep the design simple ! And anyway, do prepare for a lot of throw-up by placing benches and litters anound exit path. And do obviously keep food & drink stalls far away.
*Unlike Lay-down Roller Coaster, this gives pretty high Excitement and is easy to build. Because of the very few compatible inversions, the good designs usually have not more than 9 Intensity Rating. If your coaster has an Excitement Rating below 6 & an Intensity Rating above 9, then it has above all a problem...
* In comparison to the Lay-down Roller Coaster, the Flying Roller Coaster is more expensive and has slightly fewer options for inversions, but it has a higher natural excitement rating and its trains also have a higher maximum capacity of 32 passengers.

** Maroon, maroon, saturated brown (F.L.Y. at Phantasialand)

For the Lay-down Roller Coaster, see here.

The Flying Roller Coaster is a roller coaster type introduced in RollerCoaster Tycoon 2.

Construction

Track has a square-section steel spine, connected to the inside edges of tubular steel running rails. Supports are large tubular steel posts. Trains are held on the track by wheels below and inside the running rails. Unlike the Lay-down Roller Coaster, the Flying Roller Coaster's station starts with the track inverted.

Special Track Elements

  • Banked Curves
  • Banked Helix
  • Banked Swoop Track
  • Small Half Loop
  • Half In-Line Twist

Introduced in OpenRCT2

  • Large Half Loop (can start from both flying and laying-down positions)
  • Quarter Loop
  • Boosters
    • Laying-down position - "Enable all drawable track pieces" cheat
    • Flying position - usable by default without cheats since v0.4.3.
  • Launched Lift Hill (use "Enable all drawable track pieces" cheat)
  • Large Steep Slope to Flat Transition (use "Enable all drawable track pieces" cheat)
  • Vertical Loop (use "Enable all drawable track pieces" cheat)

Constraints

  • Maximum track slope - 50°
  • Maximum Track Slope - 60° (later extended to 90° in OpenRCT2 since v0.4.2)
  • Maximum Lift Hill Slope - 25°
  • Maximum height above ground - 145 feet

Other Information

  • The Flying Roller Coaster naturally has a high Nausea rating, rivaling that of the Suspended Swinging Coaster and only lower than that of the Multi-Dimension Roller Coaster. Because of this, care should be taken to avoid including too many turns (especially helixes) on the track. As with the Inverted Roller Coaster, it is highly recommended to install benches, litter bins, and First Aid Rooms on and near the exit path of a Flying Roller Coaster. Having Handymen patrol the exit path is also ideal, as is keeping food and drink stalls far away from a Flying Roller Coaster.
  • In comparison to the Lay-down Roller Coaster, the Flying Roller Coaster is more expensive and has slightly fewer options for inversions, but it has a higher natural excitement rating and its trains also have a higher maximum capacity of 32 passengers.
    • Since OpenRCT2 v0.4.2 and v0.4.3, the Flying Roller Coaster now has more special track piece options, including quarter and large half loops, as well as boosters in both flying and laying-down positions.
  • The Flying Roller Coaster received three new default track colour schemes in OpenRCT2 v0.4.2, each one based on a real-life flying roller coaster:
    • Light blue, dark blue, icy blue (Manta at SeaWorld Orlando)
    • Yellow, bright red, bright orange (Tatsu at Six Flags Magic Mountain pre-2021)
    • Maroon, maroon, saturated brown (F.L.Y. at Phantasialand)
      • Prior to the v0.4.5 release, this color scheme consisted of bordeaux red track and dark yellow supports.

In Real Life

The Flying Roller Coaster is designed by Bolliger & Mabillard, with the most famous B&M Flying Coaster design being Superman: The Ultimate Flight, which operates at three Six Flags parks in the United States: Six Flags Over Georgia, Six Flags Great Adventure, and Six Flags Great America.

The boosters for the Flying Roller Coaster in the flying position were inspired by F.L.Y., a Vekoma flying launched roller coaster at Phantasialand in Brühl, Germany.
