LIM Launched Roller Coaster
The LIM Launched Roller Coaster is a roller coaster type introduced in RollerCoaster Tycoon 2. As its name implies, it uses linear induction motors to launch trains out of the station at high speeds.
Construction
Track has a tubular steel spine, connected to the inside edges of tubular steel running rails. Supports are large tubular steel posts. Trains are held on the track by wheels above, below, and outside the running rails.
The LIM Launched Roller Coaster is only capable of a powered launch. It can be built to a shuttle or circuit design, and its design can include many inversions not possible with standard Looping Roller Coasters.
Special Track Elements
Note: Any track pieces marked with a dagger symbol ("†") cannot be saved onto a track design file using TD6.
- Banked Curves
- Banked Helix
- Banked Swoop Track
- Large Steep Slope Transition (also usable in OpenRCT2)
- Small Half Loop (also usable in OpenRCT2)
- Quarter Loop
- Half Corkscrew
- Large Half Corkscrew† (also usable in OpenRCT2)
- Vertical Loop
- Half Inline Twist
- Steep Twist
- Vertical Twist
- On-Ride Photo Section
Introduced in OpenRCT2
- Barrel Roll
- Medium Half Loop†
- Large Half Loop
- Zero G Roll†
- Large Zero G Roll†
The Zero G Roll track pieces are not enabled by default as the LIM Launched Roller Coaster's vehicles do not have sprites for them.
Constraints
- Banked Curves - 50 degrees
- Maximum Track Slope - 90°
- No lift hill; powered launch only.

Other Information
- Unlike other roller coaster types that can use the powered launch operating mode, the LIM Launched Roller Coaster is the only one of two roller coaster types that can use the Powered launch block sectioned mode, which allows operation of multiple trains on one ride. This is notably demonstrated on the Quantum Thruster pre-built track design. The other roller coaster type that can use the Powered launch block sectioned mode is the LSM Launched Roller Coaster, which was introduced in the v0.4.16 release of OpenRCT2.
- The LIM Launched Roller Coaster's default powered launch setting in the original release and RCT Classic emulates the RCT1 setting in which the train does not pass through the station.
- In OpenRCT2, it passes through the station by default instead, but can be modified to not pass through the station.
- In rare cases, brakes failure breakdowns can cause the train to pass through the station instead of stopping at the end of the station. To prevent this, build some track out of the back end of the station or convert the ride into a complete circuit.
In Real Life
The LIM (Linear Induction Motor) Coaster is manufactured in real life by Premier Rides. No LIM coasters were in RCT2's Six Flags parks, even though they are present in the real-life versions of these parks (two in Six Flags Great Adventure, one in Six Flags Over Texas). Great Adventure's named its LIM coaster Batman and Robin: The Chiller, Over Texas named its LIM coaster Mr. Freeze Blast Coaster (now Mr. Freeze: Reverse Blast). Great Adventure removed their two coasters in 2007 after a variety of issues forced them to close the rides indefinitely. They were located just south of where Nitro is in the park. The LIM coaster was infamous for having a rough ride and the fact that the magnets used to launch and stop the train required frequent maintenance and often didn't even work (sometimes causing the trains to valley, especially with Great Adventure's coasters). The trains on the LIM coasters featured over-the-shoulder restraints, which were quickly replaced by simple lap bars and ankle braces in 2001-2002 due to comfort issues.
A detailed history of the two LIM coasters in Great Adventure can be found here.
