The Scenario Editor was a function added to the RollerCoaster Tycoon Series with the release of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2. It allows players to create their own custom scenarios, from the rides and scenery available to build, to the scenario objectives needed to beat it.

RCT2

RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 was the first game to feature the Scenario Editor.

In the RCT2 version, the park landscape can be modified; however, attractions cannot be constructed. To create a park with rides and guests already in it, complete the following steps:

  1. Create and save the scenario with the desired landscape in the editor.
  2. Play it through the game like a normal scenario, build the desired rides, and save the park.
  3. Then use the 'Convert Saved Park to Scenario' Option in the "extras" menu.

The Rides, Scenery, Paths, and Water are the first to select when opening the scenario editor. There is also an advanced tab available, where specific pieces of scenery may be chosen, without having to select entire scenery tabs. Each tab has a limitation on the amount of each item that can be included. For example, there are 128 different ride types to select in the scenario, although there are more than that available in the game. OpenRCT2 increases all limits with the introduction of the new .park save format, so that now every scenery and ride in the game can be selected.

Once the selections are done, the next step is to landscape the map. This involves adding bodies of water, adding mountains, choosing the ground texture (grass, ice, sand, etc.) and building any scenery. Also the park-owned land has to be defined, as well as the location of the park entrance(s) and the guest spawn point(s).

After defining the guest, financial, and park settings, including starting loans and the guests' initial happiness, the final step is to set the scenario objectives and write a brief description of the scenario. Then save the scenario and play it.

Before sharing the scenario file with others, play-test it to confirm the objective can be reached.

Water

In the scenario editor, the water colour can be set. There are four options in the base installation and one as an official download:

  • Blue - the normal water seen in the game
  • Orange - To simulate lava
  • Acid Green - To simulate acid or poison
  • Green - To simulate water with algae
  • Pink (official DLC, downloadable from Chris Sawyer's website)

All five of these act in the same way and are treated by the game in the same way - as water. Water Rides automatically use any water type.

RCT3

RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 also features a scenario editor with the ability to build rides. However, many players instead use the Sandbox Mode, which is in essence almost exactly the same. The main difference is that guest/park stats cannot be changed, including decdefining the park map size or the guest happiness when they enter the park, etc.

This feature can also be used to create a non-objective scenario in which money has been enabled (by default it is disabled, can be turned on manually, or automatically when making awards ect.). So, for the player, there is no need to worry about any objective and the money syestem is still enabled. This is not possible in sandbox mode.

Increasing and decreasing the size of the park may cause lag if there are rides and scenery already on the map.
