The Vertical Drop Roller Coaster is a modern steel roller coaster, available in Tycoon, Tycoon 2, and Tycoon 3. In RCT, the ride is known as the Vertical Roller Coaster. The Vertical Drop Coaster is capable of vertical drops and rises, and features wide trains with six-across seating.

Other information
Gives a smooth ride with limited scope for special track, but allows vertical track to be built.
This coaster type is the only coaster available in RollerCoaster Tycoon that is capable of vertical track. Other roller coasters, such as the Hyper-Twister Roller Coaster and Twister Roller Coaster in RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 and beyond, are also capable of vertical track. In addition to the special track elements listed above, Vertical Drop Roller Coasters also allow for vertical track, steep twists, vertical twists, steep-to-level and level-to-steep track, and banked sloped curves (in RCT2 or later). This coaster utilizes wide and relatively short trains. Trains can have from one to three cars, and each car can seat up to six guests, so each train can hold a maximum of eighteen guests. The short trains mean that stations do not need to be as large as with other coaster types to accommodate the length of the trains or to accommodate multiple trains.

The availability of 60° lift hills, vertical slopes, steep-to-level and level-to-steep pieces, and the need for relatively short stations means that Vertical Drop Roller Coasters can often be built into smaller areas and feature more compact designs than other large roller coasters. This can help to overcome some of the ride's shortcomings, such as the relative lack of special track elements or the fact that other coaster types are capable of vertical drops in RCT2 and beyond.

The Vertical Drop Roller Coaster is based on the Dive Coaster design produced by Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M). The first Dive Coaster built in the world was Oblivion at Alton Towers (debuted in 1998); a remake of this coaster appears in the in-game version of this park. Real Dive Coasters have varying train widths; most operating Dive Coasters utilize trains that are wider than six seats, with up to ten-across seating available on different models. Several Dive Coasters also use floorless trains. There are currently fourteen B&M Dive Coasters in operation worldwide, with another two scheduled to open in 2022.
