In all three [[RollerCoaster Tycoon series|RollerCoaster Tycoon]] games, there are behind-the-scenes setting (handicaps) that are enabled on scenarios, making it harder for the player to complete the goal.

There are several special settings for scenarios and while some of them are given in the description or obvious, others are hidden. There are two settings for increased difficulty, which you can find out by opening a saved game of the according park with the scenario editor of [[RollerCoaster

===Guest Generation higher difficulty level===
This setting, also known as '''Guests are more difficult to attract''' in Scenario Options and '''harder guest generation''', will prevent you from attracting significantly more than 1,000 guests without building large coasters. In order to attract more than 1,000 guests with this setting enabled, you must build rides with an excitement rating of at least 6 and a length of at least 600 meters (1,968 feet). In exchange for this, large rides attract twice as many guests as they would with this setting disabled. For instance, a [[Wooden Roller Coaster]] normally attracts 105 guests to the park, but if one is built in a scenario with this setting enabled and has more than 6 excitement and a 600 m (1,968 ft) length, it will attract 210 guests to the park once the soft guest cap is 1,000 or higher. Note that rides must be able to use the Graph function in the ride window to be eligible for satisfying harder guest generation requirements. Additionally, if a ride has multiple stations, every section must be more than 600 m (1,968 ft) long.
